If I possessed $1,500 to spend on a home gym, I’ve got a few ideas of exactly what I’d purchase. I think fifteen hundred is a great number because that’s basically what it might cost to go to a good gym for just two years, and I figure home gym equipment will have pretty decent left over value, unlike a health club membership.

The very first thing I would buy is a good pair of adjustable dumbbells. Whenever you look for dumbbells for sale, the most important thing is getting a set that you can add weight onto without spending a ton. I think I could find a good pair of dumbbells for approximately fifty dollars, as well as maybe another fifty dollars of weights. So for $100 I would have a nice set of dumbbells.

The next thing I would put money into is some Crossfit equipment such as an Olympic bar and bumper plates. For about $700 I could get a great barbell and a heavy set of bumper plates. Using this Crossfit gear I could truly lift heavy and build up some serious strength. I would need about $100 worth of plates however to add on to the set in order to have enough weight for heavy dead lifts. Some people might suggest some Crossfit shoes to assist with balance on these types of lifts, however I’d conserve the cash for something else.

Another thing I would look for are some kettlebells for sale. I wouldn’t need more than 3 of them, so probably around $200 or so for what I need. Kettlebells are great because they put strain on the muscles in ways that you don’t get with dumbbells or barbells because of the odd shape they have.
Finally, I’d get a power rack. For around $500 I could find a good power rack and that would allow me to safely carry out squats and presses, plus nearly every power rack has a pull up bar which is great for working on the back and biceps. I could also add a dip bar down the road for a couple more bucks.
